Gruene Hall, Gruene, TX

Two southern rock bands hit the Gruene Hall stage on May 16th to remind us just how good the southern rock sound is. The genre is sadly fading from the charts today, with bands like the Allman Brothers gone and Lynyrd Skynyrd on their farewell tour, that leaves the Marshall Tucker Band as one of the genre’s fading shadows. One of the major Southern Rock band of the ‘70s, The Marshall Tucker Band combines country, rock, and jazz into one cohesive package. Originally from Spartanburg, SC the band has but a single original member left, Doug Gray, the lead singer. Playing their sixth sold out show at Gruene Hall, the band displayed a very tight and well rounded set to a rowdy and emphatic crowd. All is not lost for the genre however, because many of a new crop of artists has grown up listening to the Southern sound and it has definitely influenced their sound. The opening band, Prophets & Outlaws, is a perfect example of that.

The southern soul band Prophets & Outlaws originated in a Jesuit high school set in the heart of metropolitan Dallas when two brothers and a best friend came together in their shared love of music. Almost a decade and five EPs later, the now band of five boasts a massive fan base that spans ten states across the South and Midwest and an active online community of more than 25,000. Their commanding instrumental groove, relatable lyrics, and authentic five-part harmonies have sent them to the top of the music charts and earned the band over 2 million Spotify streams. While on the road over 100 days a year across the country, this unity is extended as an invitation to their fans every night. Each night the connection forged is real.
